Mommy Time!!

Let’s admit this to one another right now as fellow mothers: sometimes our kids make us want to be hung out by our toes and tossed out the window to be taken by the garbage truck so as long as we are taken somewhere quiet that takes care of itself.

It would be nice if we could pause the kids so Mommy could take a time out, but since we live in this world, this Mommy has some ideas for you to get away for cheap, at least for a short time before you have to change more diapers and wipe more tears.

You will need:
1 loofah
1 bottle of bubble bath or body wash
1 pair of headphones
1 method of portable music to block out Daddy trying to handle the kids

My favorite past time since becoming a mother is taking relaxing bubble baths until I’m a sexy prune. I grab an iPod or my smartphone and play some relaxing music while I soak in sweet smells and the absence of “Mommy, I had another accident on the couch.” Ah, sweet tranquility.

When I’m not listening to music I am bathing and reading a fabulous book to take my wrinkles away. It’s my way to get clean and de-stress at the same time, without the kids screaming. Other days I just grab the book and lock myself in the bathroom to read a couple chapters to unwind while they nap.

Movies are wonderful. Every once so often, pop in a movie after a meal for them to digest and relax and keep quiet for an hour while you sit in the corner with your book by yourself, the key is peaceful time in your own wonderland. Sometimes kids need something to make them sit down and be quiet before Mommy snaps a vein.

Another thing I recommend is writing. Wow, what an amazing thing this is to vent frustrations and also find some time to yourself to release any words. Writing is something I do just for fun every single day, whether it’s a heartfelt song, short poem about pineapples, or a journal entry, just the act of putting the words into life, makes me feel better and takes my tensions of the day away. No kids, no bills, no husbands, no remotes, just me and my thoughts together. If you’re a single mom, this can really help you stop trying to rip your head off.

Exercise! Seriously, don’t run away, this helps. Walking, Pilates, elliptical training, and stretching help sore muscles and the day sweat off like it never happened- light bulb moment. Do it for stress and even to also lose weight. Others love Yoga, running, and kick boxing, which I also strongly recommend on your tougher days, guess why?

Time is obviously an issue when you’re a busy mom so you can try the 10 Minute Solution DVDs for Pilates, Yoga, Kickboxing, Ab Workouts, etc. They each have five different ten minute workout solutions to choose from or you can create a personalized session combining two, three, four, or all five workouts all together to get up to fifty minutes of exercise or only thirty, it’s up to you. Someone was using their noodle, probably a Mom like us.

When I find the time, I go for a hike with friends, the husband, or even by myself where others are doing the same. Hiking is wonderful and many trails have the best views you’ll ever see in person.

A simple remedy to relax at home are neck massagers. Amazon sells many for under $15 of all brands, even Homedeics. Browse their selection of neck massagers that take out tight muscles and some that also have a heating element while they massage your achy shoulders and neck. Your man has met his match, and the massager won’t complain or go lazy on you.

Massages and spa days are wonderful if you can get the time away from home to go out and really pamper yourself. Part of being a great mom is keeping your sanity under control and having the time to re-energize to keep up with the rest of the house. Never feel guilty for finding time for yourself so your hair remains in tact on your head, instead of in your tight fists of anxiety.

How to Keep a Home Safe and Healthy

So, maybe you are not a helicopter mom, exactly, but you do worry for the safety of your children. The only thing that can really give us a sense of peace is knowing that we have done our best for our kids. While being too over protective may not be conducive to childhood, it is something that is often hard for parents to overcome, so why not be safe than sorry.

*Customer Review: “As soon as you open up the GoCrib you get the sense that it is a carefully designed, well-made product. Everything: from the backpack with the instruction manual sleeve and separate pocket for the included pump, compression straps, and the crib itself, has been thoughtfully designed for ease of use. This website is an absolute must for any parent that has “little fishies” at home.

SAFE KIDS

Safekids.org This is an inclusive website that has everything you would ever want to know about child safety. Since accidental and unintentional injury is the leading cause of death and disability in children 1 to 14 years old, this website helps parents and educators understand the dangers around them and offers ways to keep our children safe. Included in this website’s information is always ways to discuss unpleasant subjects with your children, like stranger danger, kidnapping and abduction, like this article on Child Pedestrians. It is a great read for any parent who sends their child off to school on foot.

http://www.safekids.org/assets/docs/ourwork/research/research-report-pedestrian-2006.pdf#__utma=-&__utmb=-&__utmc=-&__utmx=-&__utmz=-&__utmv=-&__utmk=38294271

While addressing safety concerns in the home and away may be a bit worrisome for some parents and their children, it is better to be “safe…than sorry” as the old adage goes and while we give “helicopter moms” or hovering moms a bad rap, they actually should be commended in some ways for being very diligent about their child’s safety and well being.

More Ways to Eat Better, Save Money

From one Mom to another, there are great, inexpensive ways to feed the whole family better foods while saving money that was being spent on sugary cereals and unhealthy breakfast options.

A box of Cap’n Crunch or Cocoa Pebbles, each cost around $4 per box while a cannister of Quaker Rolled Oats costs a little less, and lasts much longer. Cereals pour right out as kids eat more than a serving and don’t feel full; but oatmeal is different. The kids need a smaller amount and will feel full much sooner while getting whole grain and fiber they need without a lot of sugar. Add a little brown sugar, fresh fruit, or milk and cinnamon for flavor and enjoy.
Let the kids get creative and see how they learn to enjoy eating a better, more affordable breakfast.

For dinner and lunch, items like pasta and whole wheat pastas are very inexpensive to feed the family and help them feel fuller on less food and expense. Flavor with vegetables, beans, and any sauce or oils you’d like with seasonings. Canned beans and jarred sauces work fine for little money.

My son has a sensitivity to milk products so we bought him Silk Very Vanilla soymilk instead, and he loves it! The milk is fortified with vitamins he needs while naturally containing more calcium, protein, and Vitamin D than cow’s milk. This is a great item to order or buy at wholesale places like Costco or Sam’s Club, and use coupons as well. This will run a little higher than milk but a great replacement for more expensive sodas, flavored drinks, and juices, or unhealthy snacks and kids love it. My son even eats it with his Full Circle Organic Honey Nut Toasted Oats (like Honey Nut Cheerios) and I agree it actually tastes very good together; better than milk.

These types of items are available in most grocery stores across the country and some Target or Walmart stores also sell them. Amazon.com might surprise you that they also sell grocery items like these and in bulk sizes to save money with rapid shipping to get it ASAP. Amazon also allows you to enter the coupon codes you have to save money on their already low prices or use their special offer coupons. Shoppers can even subscribe to their service to save an extra 15% on each order

We also switched the type of bread we feed ourselves and my son. I switched to Food For Life Cinnamon Raisin bread because it does not contain preservatives, crazy chemicals, or high fructose corn syrup. It also has more fiber and less cholesterol and fat than other breads, plus he loves the taste as toast or in sandwiches. These breads and products are made with more whole grain and wheat than other common brands to get him the whole grain nutrition he needs all day, plus it’s organic so no cancer causing presiticides and fertilizer additives.

For ideas about healthier foods and snacks for the kids, go to www.easylunchboxes.com for some great ideas for all budgets.

With the terrible economy raising prices, moms need new ways to save money while still providing the necessary nutrition so, there’s an app for that. Smartphone users can use the coupons apps to save money. For everyone else, we can clip coupons, buy in bulk, and search online for all the websites that offer coupons to save money and deals. Check prices with Target and Walmart also and most will be cheaper than the grocery stores.

Use the coupons offered on their website to save a more by clicking the link right above and exploring new recipes and click here for more Target Bullseye deals and recipe ideas.

Target shoppers should look for Archer Farms brand items, a Target brand, for better prices than name brands but with excellent taste. Walmart shoppers may also want to get a Sam’s Club membership for a very small annual fee with special access to excellent deals everyday, even without coupons.

Shop Walmart and Target first to get as much as you can there first online or in the store and take any coupons you have to save the most money, because these stores are cheaper than grocery shopping for almost every item your family will need. Personal hygiene items, cleaning products, milk, cheese, cereal, bread, and more are all available for lower prices at these two stores and also have plenty other things all in one spot, to save gas money and time.

Healthier Foods, But Very Affordable

Have you read the average food label lately? Yuck! Most of it you can’t even pronounce. There is a scene in the Disney movie Ratatouille, where the one rat who craves gourmet cuisine in Paris where they live and his brother gnawing on something he found in the garbage. “What…is…that?” The brother tells him, “I don’t know.” “You don’t know, and yet you’re eating it?” The brother insists, “Once you past the gag reflex, all kinds of possibilities open up.” It’s gross but true. Today almost everything the average American eats is composed of ingredients they don’t know what they are.

I read a label and I ask a person what is “sodium phosphate” or “monosodium glutamate”, also known as MSG, which many don’t know, and they say, “I don’t know”. So why are you eating it? Why let your child eat it? One of our jobs as parents is to give our kids the best nutrition we can, 100% of the time for better health and habits now to carry later, because our health today impacts theirs at 80, and our next generations. Poor eating leads to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart attacks, so if we continue to eat the same way, we make our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more susceptible to these diseases simply because we didn’t care about our own health. Their medical history and genetics are because we were too lazy to eat right.

While the economy is running on the last drop in its reserve tank, we can still provide our kids with better foods and keep within our budgets. First of all, most food expenses are on junk foods anyways so cutting them out can save hundreds each month. You are spending far more on chips, juice, candy, fruit snacks, and processed foods than you think. Instead of cookies and most crackers, even Wheat Thins, which are not healthy, try giving them a handful or two of Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Goldfish crackers. There are less processed, have less chemicals and cancer causing ingredients, and far healthier than the common choices.

Simply™ products are a new line of everyday items kids love, just done better. For instance, GoGurts that kids love so much are now available in Simply™ varieties with the same taste but no funky chemicals and NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP; just natural ingredients at the same price. They also make fruit roll ups, ready to cook cookie dough and buttermilk biscuit rolls. They taste exactly the same but much better for you.

Moms are changing and they are letting the companies know, we want less junk and additives and more things we can use from nature as we did since the dawn of time.

Instead of hydrogenated oils that bring trans fats and suffocate the heart, peanut butter can be bought without high fructose corn syrup, palm oil, and chemicals. For a good price, try Laura Scudder’s Natural peanut butter or Adam’s brand. Both are available in supermarkets and even Wal-Mart stores nationwide. Our family uses Laura Scudder’s No Salt Added; the only ingredient: peanuts.

Cereals are loaded with scientific ingredients that inhibit our bodies from absorbing vitamins and nutrition so Full Circle Organic is just one of many brands that have excellent tasting cereals from organic and natural foods. My son loves Honey Nut Toasted Oats, instead of the chemical filled Honey Nut Cheerios, and even grandma agrees the taste is better. We never pay more for better food, and often this cereal is on sale for at least a dollar less. Score!

Mott’s applesauce is good, and for the same price we go with the Natural version: same ingredients but minus high fructose corn syrup and no added sugars. We always eat it and my friends all say they actually liked it better than the original. They are also available in individual lunch packs of 6 and the same price as the ones with the bad ingredients.

Even in a small town with not much of a market for it, our local grocery stores are carrying more natural, organic products at competitive prices and more selection each month. Wal-Mart and Target’s grocery sections also sell them, usually a little cheaper. Search retailmenot.com for free coupon codes to save at the checkout and swap with other community members online, for free! Eat healthy today for a healthy future our great grandchildren can inherit.

Teen Literacy

Some of us with older children are either blessed with book worms, or struggle to get our teens to read. So here are some ideas to help inspire your teen to find a love of books and learning.

ADLIT.ORG, ADOLESCENT LITERACY

Adlit.org focuses on teens and issues with literacy. The site offers recommendations for authors, books and ways to get your teen to read. In this high tech, fast paced world it seems harder and harder to get a teenager to focus on quiet time and reading that doesn’t include their cell phone, hand held or TV game player, MP3 player or time spent “hanging out”. Getting kids to read means helping them become interested in different authors and subjects. This website gives tips on how to get your teen interested in reading. It offers lists of popular books for teens, sorted by category here: http://www.adlit.org/books_by_theme and strategies for motivation http://www.adlit.org/article/c128/ as well as suggestions for college readiness http://www.adlit.org/ready_for_college among many other interesting topics.

Strategies for Reading Comprehension Tests

They also have an online store that provides books to help differently able learners, parents and educators with reading challenges.

TEENREADS.COM

Teenreads.com is another good website centered around teen readers. They offer contests and tons of book categories that may spark any teens interest. The site also has a blog and updated Ultimate Reading List.

AMAZON.COM TEEN READING

This link has a list of teen related books, some that look really interesting all marketed to catching a teen’s attention.

AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

ALA.com is the American Library Association and on their website they have a special section on teens and teen literacy. Also provided on their website is a membership to YALSA, (Young Adult Library Services Association) which help promote reading enthusiasm by offering discounts on books, contests, webinars, classes and more for a nominal annual fee.  http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/yalsa/joinus/joinus.cfm

YALSA: Young Adult Library Services Association

THE BOOK DEPOSITORY

The Book Depository.com is a website that sells hundreds of books at discounted rates. If you do a search on their site for “teens” it brings up a lot of great books written for and about teens.

The Book Depository

BOOKS-A-MILLION

Books-a-million.com has books and e-books at greatly discounted rates, they also specialize in popular children and teen books. This is a fun website to browse and they support ebooks and and sell ebook readers. Sometimes when trying to combat technology, it is better to match it with technology. If you can convince your child to read a book on his or her e-reader, it is easier for them to read, listen to music and watch movies. As long as they are reading, then having other interests, all supported on one device can actually be a benefit and a motivation for teen readers to be enthusiastic about their books.

However, getting your teen to read, is important and fostering a sense of joy and curiosity about discovering new books is vital to their success as an adult. Be it fiction, non-fiction or periodicals, whatever gets your teen reading and expanding their minds, will help them be better educated, more well rounded adults. Also diving into a good book, can keep teens from trying other things out of boredom.

Also try…

Teenlit.com a site that not only promotes teen readers, but also teen writers with contests and interactive programs.

Reading Rants (out of the ordinary teen book lists) This is a cool website that is not only hip and cool (teens love hip and cool) but also interactive, with teens reviewing the books and well researched as there are many exciting teen-centric things to choose from. I think I may go over there and pick out a few books for myself…shhhh.

Almost Time For Taxes

I know that even the mention of taxes may be sending chills down your spine. And I will note that I AM NOT A TAX PROFESSIONAL. So, just in case you think I am an undercover tax accountant or other professional in the tax field, I am not, but I’m a mom who has to pay taxes and I too have to go through the quagmire of tax mumbo jumbo.

2010 is a fascinating year for tax payers as there are a few new things that have the IRS scrambling, thanks to our Presidential administration, if you don’t already know about some of these tax breaks, you will be very happy if you are an adoptive parent, a person who just “greened” your home, purchased an electric car or recently purchased a home for the first time.

NEW HOME BUYER CREDIT

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:fjC-29P71yYJ:www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id%3D204671,00.html+First+time+home+buyer+credit+2010&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

This information is from the IRS.gov website states that if you bought your home as a first time home buyer in 2008, 2009 or up until September 2009 as your primary residence you are eligible for a credit up to $8,000 which will either reduce the amount you owe in taxes, or increase your refund as the credit is refundable after all tax liability is reduced. The only downside to this credit is, if you altered (structurally) or sold your home (2008-2010) then you will have to repay a portion of your credit.

ADOPTION TAX CREDIT/REFUND

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=220809,00.html

If you expanded your family through adoption in 2010 (or in the last 5 years) you are eligible for an adoption tax credit that is NOW refundable thanks to Obama’s Affordable Care Act. What this means to adoptive parents who adopted children between the years of 2005 to 2010 is that the adoption credit amount from the adopting year ($10,000 to $13,130) is now fully refundable. This credit includes all adoption related expenses (lawyer fees, travel, lodging, filing fees) for a domestic or foreign adoption of a minor child under the age of 18. The credit is also refundable for a special needs adoption (sibling group, older child, child of a minority ethnicity or from adverse family history), which is any child adopted through the state who receives AAP (adoption assistance payments) through the federal government on a monthly basis to care for their special needs child, will get the FULL AMOUNT REFUNDED.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TAX CREDIT

If you purchased energy saving appliances (which are federally approved) made energy efficient modifications to your home (ie, solar water heater, energy efficient windows, energy efficient cooling and heating systems) then you are eligible for a credit of 30% of the expense paid for those items. Also if you purchased an electric car, you are eligible for up to $7,500 in tax credits. Look at the link above to see if you qualify for any of these credits.

DEDUCTION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION EXPENSES

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p970/ch06.html

You can claim this tax credit if your self, your spouse (if married) or your dependent paid tuition for higher education. Each tax payer who qualifies can deduct up to $4,000 from their tax liability to cover tuition and qualified higher education expenses.

FREE OR MODERATELY PRICED ONLINE TAX WEBSITES

So, you have all of your tax papers, credits and stuff and are ready to get started. Well, you can pay an accountant to do your taxes for you or you can use one of these easy tax websites that offer, step by step online software that will guide you easily through your tax return.

My personal favorite is TURBO TAX online as they claim to give get the biggest tax return and in my estimation they are the easiest to use.

Turbo taxThe software platform walks you through your return, step by step.

Another good online tax service is HR BLOCK online. Again this is a software platform that walks you through your return and finds all of your eligible deductions, credits and claims. Both Turbo Tax and HR Block give help you do both your federal and state taxes and will file them for you through their website. For an additional fee you can also purchase audit support from both tax companies.

H&R Block

JACKSON HEWITT also has an online services that guides you through your tax preparation and helps you file online.

Family Time on the Cheap, and Retro

Today’s families do not spend enough time together for a plethora of reasons as well as bottomless excuses for why they have no time for it. We say we have “no time” but we have Facebook, TV, and gaming apps on our smartphones? Yet today’s families also watch a day’s worth of television every week , which doesn’t really count as family time. Once in a while is fine and for those times, there are some ways to incorporate television and family conversation to come closer together in a brand new, old way.

Remember the shows you always loved growing up? From the cartoons and shows at the younger ages all the way to the classic sitcoms you miss now, reminiscing about the memories and episodes those shows remind you of is a fun discussion to have with your children and to show them what they are missing from today’s television lineup.

Talking about your favorite shows as a kid with your child provides an active discussion in the family that is fun for everyone and a nice way to connect with one another on a unique platform. These shows bring up memories of other times as well, and that helps keep the conversation going while educating the kids more on their family and who their parents are outside of their role. Kids are interested in where they came from, they are just stubborn to engage that talk until it’s being done their way, not like a classroom.

Current Children’s programming isn’t as imaginative and charismatic like the days when we grew up, and though our kids may call us “old” or may not initially be willing to watch, they secretly want to know what The Smurfs and Flinstones were all about.

With the invention of DVD and Blu-Ray, those beloved tales are now on digital disc to watch with the whole family, appropriate for all ages. Gilligan’s Island, M.A.S.H., I Love Lucy, and the Beverly Hillbillies are all available so you can all watch them together while eating dinner and/or dessert. It’s cheaper than going to the movies and going out to eat all together, and a healthier alternative to movie theater candy, soda, and popcorn drowning in butter and salt.

In addition to these shows are those from the 80’s and 90’s like: Tale Spin, Duck Tales, Chip and Dale, and The Jetsons. The kids would love to see “Dinosaurs” too. “Not the Mamma!” Who doesn’t recall the adorable little baby dinosaur who loves his mommy but whacks his daddy on the head with a frying pan will reciting that famous line? Just like Stewie Griffin on the current popular “Family Guy”, that little baby was in full control, but more appropriate for the little ones.

Tvparty.com is a wonderful little gem I found while browsing the Internet last week to buy all of your favorite shows from the past in one site, sold through amazon.com.

This is a great alternative to watching modern shows, even geared for kids, such as “Glee” that send a damaging message to our children. Shows are based on the lives of young kids and adolescents yet depict sex with multiple partners, false representation of real love and relationships, diva selfish behaviors, and getting into legal trouble as a fun idea. Parents are becoming increasingly disturbed by the negative progression of what is being shown on networks, so they are constantly talking about “the good ole days” when we weren’t seeing so much glorified teen pregnancy and drama because the ninth grade girl lost her “true love” after they had been dating a whopping two months.

Go back to the Brady Bunch, Full House, and cartoons like Doug, Animaniacs, or even Gumby! Pop in a DVD of your favorite show of any era and enjoy the wonderous past of your youth and magical present of a beautiful family to share it with this time around.

View the large selection of new and classic television here!

A Little “Me” Time For Mom

Right! You say, there is no such thing as “me” time and I have to agree, but we must remind ourselves that it is important to carve out that time for ourselves or we will go batty! We don’t want to end up a Mommy Dearest with our eyes twitching and our over red colored lips a quivering….so breathe, relax and grab a few minutes just for you.

COLORING PAGES

Yep, you heard me right, chances are you have a few thousand crayons, markers and colored pencils hanging around the house, why not sit down and do some therapeutic coloring on your own.  Color Pages For Mom is a website that provides free intricate coloring pages for Moms (and Dads) to color either on their own or with their kids. Coloring is very therapeutic and can offer a quick way to unwind and relax.

GET AN IPHONE, IPAD, E-READER, NOOK OR ANY OTHER DO ANYTHING GADGETY THING

The great thing about technology these days is that it continually advances to bring us better and better stuff. Well, if you are a mom on the go with very little time to sit down and take a moment to yourself, you may want to consider getting a epad, iphone kind of gadget that loads movies, books and a quick browse of the internet. What better thing to do while waiting at doctor’s offices, outside of schools, at dance class or the park, when your kids are busy, you can take a quick read of one of your favorite books or a snippet of a movie that you have downloaded. Better yet, steal yourself away from the house and the kids with your little gadget and take a few minutes to just unwind. Most of these electronics come with application stores where you can buy just about anything you would like to help entertain you and make your time to yourself more enjoyable.

EXCERCIZE

Do you already own a Wii? Well when the kiddos go to sleep you can use it to play games, of course or to get a little exercise with games such as Wiifit

or try the PX90 and other workouts available on DVD at the Extreme Body Workout website.

SOCIAL NETWORKING

Places like Facebook, Myspace and Cafe Mom are good places to browse for friends, post status updates, message each other, upload pictures and video and get a little adult social interaction that being at home all day with a child often doesn’t afford.

It is recommended that moms take at least 45 minutes to an hour (at the minimum) each day of quiet private time to rejuvenate and reload. You are not being the world’s best parent if you are running yourself into the ground, most likely you’ll be more tired and cranky if you don’t take a minute and find some “me” time, to reconnect with the world’s most important person, you!

Family Outings and Dining

Part of spending quality family time together includes going out and enjoying each other’s company as a group. Families with a Purpose is a website that looks at families and the different choices they make for parenting their children.

We have already looked at minimalist and organic parenting, but each family has specific goals and dreams for raising their children and their activities together often will reflect the decisions they make. Families with a Purpose offers a local attraction page per city that may give parents some new ideas about what to do with their special day together. FAMILY OUTINGS

Goby.com also offers a great resource for family fun. Simply enter the city and type of activity you are looking for into their search engine and the application will pull up countless number of activities for your family to do. You can even use the application on your phone, in case you are already out and about and want to be spontaneous.

FAMILY DINING

I love to take the family out to restaurants every once in a while, it gives me a break from having to prepare meals and clean them and it is fun for each of us get what the want to eat. However, dining with family can be exhausting and frustrating if you go to a place that isn’t family friendly, so here are some national chains that are considered the very best in family dining by Parent’s Magazine.

PARENTS MAGAZINE’S TEN BEST FAMILY DINING RESTAURANTS

For those of you on the East Coast there is #1 Legal Seafood which offers a kids menu with adult-type foods in smaller portions. This makes kids feel special as they can eat what their parents are eating, which makes them feel more grown up. Legal Seafood also has an online store that delivers to your door for at home family fun, if there isn’t a restaurant in your local area.

Legal Sea Foods Lobster Bib and Claw-Cracker

#2 Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes offers buffet style dining that has great healthy choices for your whole family. With big open dining rooms and all you can eat buffet offerings, this is a great place to bring the kids and let them design their own healthy meals. You may want to use your outing as a way to teach about making good food choices.

Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes

#3 Mimi’s Cafe has a great children’s menu and serve goldfish and snacks upon arrival. They also provide highchairs and bibs for the little guys. Also their fries are trans-fat free and they have many healthy options for children (and parents) to chose from.

Mimi's Cafe

These are the top ten, the others included Uno Bar and Grill, Chilis, Red Robin, Old Spaghetti Factory, PF Chang’s China Bistro, Denny’s and the Claim Jumper.

AND SOMETHING MORE UNIQUE

It may take a bit of searching but doing a Google search for a Play Cafe in your area might be worth the effort to find a fun place for your kids to just be kids and for you to have a little adult talk time, while getting a healthy meal. Here are some examples of places that are fun and family friendly.

THE LITTLE TREE HOUSE, PHILADELPHA

PLAY CAFE, OAKLAND

Play Cafe LLC | LLC

NIBBLES PLAY CAFE

These are just a few of play cafe’s that are around the nation, but go on an adventure, to scout one out in your area.

FAMILY POT LUCK

Another fun way for parents to have adult interactions while still entertaining their children is to have a family pot luck and gather together friends, neighbors or school mates for a family pot luck, where  everyone brings a dish and the kids can eat and play together. Rotate the hosting house so that the family doesn’t get burned out, but a fun family pot luck really is a great way to help your children learn about socialization and keeps you connected to your friends. Consider having a weekly dinner, we meet with our kid’s God parents every week for a family pot luck and I have seen the kids really benefit from this kind of social interaction.
