Many people I know have been hit pretty hard this winter with the flu bug. Usually if the parents get the flu, it has either been generously shared by our children or will so be shared, which often means that the whole family is sick. I forget how hard it is to keep a house running, when you are feeling run down. So here are some ideas to help you through the flu’s blues.
One big issue for me is just getting out of the house and doing the grocery shopping, let alone cooking a meal, when I am feeling poorly. One great resource for your grocery shopping needs is Vons.com, who can deliver groceries to your door within 24 hours. That means if you are tired of pizza delivery or Chinese/Thai etc. you can have healthy meals delivered right to your front door.
VONS.COM
Vons.com The way the site works, you log in or register with the website, then choose a delivery time.
Delivery is anywhere from $6.95 to 12.95 depending on the time slot and delivery duration you prefer. This is really a helpful service if you are too sick to move. The driver will also put everything in your kitchen for you for free and they do not accept tips, so this saves a bit of money as well. I like to use this service when I am planning for a party as well as when I am under the weather because, I can look at my order online and make sure that I have everything I need. It is really a great helper for any mother.
MANZANILLA TEA, LEMON AND HONEY
My Latino neighbor just turned me on to the best stuff in the world. When I looked it up online, I found that the tea she offered me really has healing properties. I was sold immediately. She brought me a piping hot cup of Manzanilla Tea with fresh squeezed lemon and lots of honey and instantly my soar throat and aching muscles felt much better. I was really amazed. Here is the tea…
This is a chamomile tea infusion and the only online company I found that sells it is Amazon.com Natura Te. I also found an article on Livestrong.com that talks about the benefits of drinking this tea when you are sick. Manzanilla Tea. Here is a segment from the article that says Manzanilla tea drinkers have these properties in their urine that prove the tea is aiding in cold symptom relief.
Easing Cold Symptoms
In the London-based study, researchers found a urinary increase of hippurate, a product which has been associated with antibacterial activity. This chemical may account for the apparent boost to the immune system and reports of relief from cold symptoms by manzanilla tea drinkers.

Another amazing thing to help cure colds is…
THE NETI POT

This nasal irrigation system actually clears nasal passages and relieves sinus pressure. I started having sinus infections and the only thing that made them any better at all was my neti pot. You simply tilt your head and pour the saline solution and water through one nostril and out the other. Then you gently blow the mucus out of your nose. It clears debris, infection and helps relieve sinus pressure. Highly recommended for a bad cold.
OTHER HELPFUL TIPS
It is rare that mom ever gets sick, but if she does 🙂 here are some tips to help you get prepared.
1. Make sure that you have frozen meals in your fridge ready to prepare, so that you don’t have to cook. You can always order pizza, but if you’re sick for a few days, you’ll probably also be sick of pizza.
2. Make sure that you are stocked up on medicine, at least enough adult and child varieties of medicine so that you can last three days or more.
3. Make a list of friends and family who can pick up/drop off kids at school or daycare and do some baby sitting while you try and recover. It is hard to not be there for your family, but your longevity and wellness depends on you being able to ask for help.
4. Have a stash of new DVDs or an online movie site that has movies your kids have never seen to keep them amused while you try to sleep. While this is against most people’s parenting ethics, if you are under the weather and just trying to get rest, this can often be the best solution for your little ones. You can also make sure that you have new books and magazines available as well.
